The Rebirth Many bands dream about their music being heard around the world. The Los Angeles based band The Rebirth accomplished this when their first single "This Journey In" was quickly featured on three international CD compilations: King Britt's "Black to the Future", Gilles Peterson's "Trust a DJ", and then the Norman Jay MBE compilation "Giant 45". Gilles Peterson included the song as one of his 20 best in 2003, and Norman Jay called it, "The anthem of the summer 2003." The band's creator Carlos "Loslito" Guaico calls the song "the little song that could." Few bands achieve such success from their first single, but few bands possess the history and background of The Rebirth. Their story is a journey into the past and future of soul music. The Rebirth is a septet built on an organic blend of new and traditional soul, hip-hop, jazz, and funk. These ingredients make the group's music both highly progressive and a throwback to the classic soul bands, Earth, Wind & Fire, Ramp, Pleasure, Rotary Connection, Side Effect and Roy Ayers. The Rebirth's strength is not only present in the chemistry provided by the instruments, but also in the group's dynamic harmonic vocal layering. In this age of sampling and computers, the crafting of the great song and the great record is simply not as common. The Rebirth is prepared to fully represent the return of the quintessential soul band. Leader and creator of The Rebirth, Carlos "Loslito," original keyboardist for the LA underground funk troop Breakestra, has been conceptualizing The Rebirth since the Acid Jazz movement in the early 90's. Groups like Soul 2 Soul, Brand New Heavies, Jamiroquai, Omar and the underrated Young Disciples inspired Loslito to write and perform similar soulful music. From this era came the studio project turned live act known as Mesh of Mind. Mesh of Mind had good local LA and studio success but when members went their seperate ways to work with other groups, Loslito used that experience as the learning grounds for what The Rebirth is today. Carlos feels "The project has matured and all the current members have synchronicity not only on a performance level, but most importantly on an instinctual level." He notes that "Leonard Bernstein once said, 'You are the sum of your listening experience' and in The Rebirth's case we have been influenced by the same types of music and it helped us to achieve a complimentary state without force in our music". In 1995 Carlos met drummer Chris "C-Quest" Taylor, and that marked the beginning of the current group known as The ReBirth. Call it divine intervention or coincidence, but Chris Taylor is also the son and nephew of members of the 70's R&B super group, The Newbirth. This may explain Chris' creative prowess and his love for The Rebirth's music style. The other talented members of the The Rebirth band include: co-lead vocalist Noelle Scaggs, guitarist Patrick Bailey, bass player "Lectric" Gregory Malone, percussionist Raul "Lil Big Fat" Gonzalez, and Mark Cross on keyboards.
