YEAR AT-A-GLANCE...

Thursday Feb 13th - Thursday Feb 19th, 2026 BRAZIL is the largest Latin country in the Americas
BRAZIL is the largest Latin country in the Americas with cultural influences of this country are a blend of Native American, African, European and Portuguese customs. As an added fact, it claims the most recognized and uninhibited of all Carnival celebrations on the globe.
For the people of Brazil, Carnival is an enormous festival of pride, culture and party energy celebrated annually before Lent each. While Salvador da Bahia claims the largest celebration, Rio de Janeiro’s, massive Street Parties (called Blocos), lavish Masquerade Balls and prestigious Samba school competition make it the epic televised event watched around the world!
The signature parade competition in Rio’s Sambadrome Stadium goes on through the entire week, where the top samba troops in the city contend fiercely for the coveted championship crown. Showcased are large, hand-crafted, visually impressive parade floats from each Samba school, led by a beautiful “Samba Queen”. The Samba Queen is accompanied by thousands (yes, thousands) of male & female singers, drummers and dancers in dazzling costumes performing choreographed routines to the Samba beat. It is such an overwhelming, exuberant display of artistry & showmanship – that if you look closely, you’ll may even spot several Samba dancers with absolutely no costume at all! (WHOA)
After the past twelve years of attendance, we can say this event never disappoints! Make plans as we set our sites on a proper return next February. Join the Funky People for the the biggest party on the planet at Carnavale 2026!

DON’T MISS YEAR-END DATE: Taking trends, making trends and breaking trends, Josh Wink’s music under any of his many monikers has always experimented and influenced. JOSH WINK: “Some people get pigeonholed as being into just one thing’, Wink remarks, ‘I hate that. When there are rules, it doesn’t become art, and it’s not fun. I’ve learned that you can’t please everybody, so I’d rather be concerned with making good art, and the people that like this art will stick with you.”
Philadelphia born and based Josh Wink is one of the true pioneers of techno, house and allied styles – blurring the definitions.
At 13, a young Josh Wink began his first job as an apprentice at Captain Jack’s mobile DJ Company, three years later, he started to DJ at local house parties. By 1988 – the year that ‘rave’ exploded into public consciousness – Wink was already a main player on the underground music scene.
“Then I began to realize that I had ideas of songs. Instead of DJing other people’s music, I wanted to translate these ideas into my own music that was in my head. House music and new wave electronic music really influenced me when I was a teenager. Plus, going to see Jazzy Jeff and Cash Money DJ in Philly made me want to get more into the ‘art’ of DJing.”
As a DJ, since his 1988 ‘rave’ beginnings, Josh Wink extensively traveled the globe since 1995 – playing every festival that counts, through to the smallest and underground venues around the globe. “The Best DJ experience is being able to create an audio atmosphere where an audience can absorb from me, while I get absorbed from them.” His only residency in the world is held in his hometown of Philadelphia at Fluid.
Taking trends, making trends and breaking trends, Josh Wink’s music (under its many monikers including Wink, Winc, Winks, Winx, The Crusher, E-Culture, and Size 9, Accent, Dinky Dog, J Dawg and The Crusher) has always experimented and influenced. The sound of Josh Wink today remains one of a man unafraid to walk the border between stylistic boundaries.

WINTER 2026 LIVE SERIES: The Birchmere Presents: Avery Sunshine on January 17, 2026. Denise Nicole White known professionally as Avery Sunshine (sometimes stylized as Avery*Sunshine, is an American singer, songwriter and pianist. Born in Chester, Pennsylvania, to Ruth Eleanor White and Irving Cyril White, she began playing piano at 8, after she saw a classmate perform, and learned to read hymns before beginning to study classical music at 11. At 13, she expanded her repertoire to include jazz and had her first recital. Three years later, her aunt, a church choir director, asked Sunshine to fill in for her during a Sunday service at a Catholic church; she was subsequently hired by churches of all denominations, including the AME Church, where she performed with the award-winning Wilmington/Chester Mass Choir.
In college, White met Maia Nkenge Wilson, a vocal major, and together they formed a gospel and R&B singing duo, DaisyRew. In addition to performing in Africa, DaisyRew performed at churches in the area and at clubs, including the Apache Café, which was noted for launching the careers of several prominent artists, including India.Arie. Wilson was cast in a Broadway role following college, and Sunshine was hired as the Minister of Music at the St. Paul AME Church in Atlanta. DaisyRew continued to perform when Wilson, on breaks from her theatrical career in New York, returned to Atlanta.
While working at the St. Paul AME Church, White met Dana Johnson, a guitarist, producer and songwriter who had previously worked with India.Arie. White, Johnson and Wilson began working together in 2003 with Johnson writing and producing the music, in addition to managing DaisyRew’s career. Soon after, Wilson was again cast in a Broadway production and she left for New York. White then adopted the name AverySunshine.
In 2005, White and Johnson recorded “Stalker”, a neo soul song, which a friend, Chris Brann, set to a house beat. The track became a dance hit on a Japanese record label, which led to a series of live dates in Japan.
White and Johnson began work on what became AverySunshine’s self-titled first album, released in 2010 on their own label, BigShine. Recorded mainly at White’s home with ProTools, the record included guest appearances by the pianist Takana Miyamoto, the vibraphone player Roy Ayers and Christian McBride. The record was praised by the media, with USA Today calling it “refreshingly original” and The Washington Post describing it as “a radiant brand of soul”. White — a single mother of two – focused on AverySunshine, but also accepted jobs as a keyboard player with artists including Tyler Perry and Jennifer Holiday and worked as a choral director for Atlanta performances by artists such as Michael Bublé, Anthony Hamilton and David Foster. Since 2010, Avery Sunshine has toured consistently, and developed a following throughout the United States, the UK, Europe and Africa.

2026 KICKOFF DC SHOW: Throughout a career that dates back to the early ’80s, Will Downing has been among the steadiest and most productive artists in R&B. Not cut out to hop aboard commercial production trends for the sake of attaining mainstream success, he has tended to stick resolutely to a sophisticated and modern sound based in soul and jazz. He mixes refined originals with spirited covers, and combines his deep and rich voice with a restrained “song first” approach. A native of Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood, Downing began his recorded professional career as a background vocalist during sessions for several acts, including Jennifer Holliday, Nona Hendryx, and Rose Royce.
After he was part of Arthur Baker‘s one-album group Wally Jump Jr. & the Criminal Element, he signed a solo deal with Island and debuted with a cover of Deniece Williams‘ “Free”. His first three albums include “Will Downing” (1988), “Come Together as One” (1989) and “A Dream Fulfilled” (1991). The latter, featuring “I Try” (Top 20 Billboard R&B Hit) and a version of Paul Davis‘ “I Go Crazy,” significantly increased his fan base of listeners who craved mature R&B and vocal jazz unaffected by hip-hop. With six of his albums reaching the R&B Top 20, he continues to work, delivering Lust, Love & Lies: An Audio Novel in 2010, after which he released a handful of albums on his Sophisticated Soul label. He moved to Shanachie for Black Pearls (2016), on which he paid tribute to Phyllis Hyman, Jean Carn, and Randy Crawford, among other women who have inspired him. In 2017 he delivered the studio album Soul Survivor, featuring the single “Feeling the Love” with vocalist Avery Sunshine.

NEW YEAR COMEDY TOUR: A stand-up comic, writer, actor and producer, Deon Cole’s most high-profile role was as a writer and on-screen performer on both “The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien” (NBC 2009-10) and its follow-up “Conan” (TBS 2010- ). As a comedy performer he appeared on numerous stand-up showcases and in films and TV shows including the Ice Cube and Cedric the Entertainer-starring comedy films “Barbershop” (2002) and “Barbershop 2: Back in Business” (2004), as well as the football-based situation comedy “The League” (FX 2009-15).
Born and raised on the south side of Chicago, Cole first tried out stand-up at the age of 21 when a friend bet him fifty dollars that he wouldn’t be able to get up on stage and do a spot at an open mic night. The attempt succeeded and he would go on to perform at many Chicago comedy clubs before becoming a national touring act. Earning increasingly regular television spots, he appeared on “Nick Cannon Presents: Wild’n Out” (MTV 2002-07, 2013- ), “Martin Lawrence Presents 1st Amendment Standup” (Starz 2005-10), the revived “Def Comedy Jam” (HBO 2006-08) and a half-hour Comedy Central special in 2007.

WINTER 2026 LIVE SERIES: The Birchmere Presents: Bilal on February 28, 2026. Bilal Sayeed Oliver is a truly independent artist. A singer, songwriter, and producer who has always been ahead of his time – the Grammy Award-winning artist blends jazz, afro-futurism, classic soul, alternative R&B, rock and classical in his vocals and music.
Bilal is known for his wide vocal range, an artist who works across multiple genres, and gives magnetic live performances. Interscope Records signed Bilal to a major label recording deal fresh out of college, after studying jazz composition and opera at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York. His debut album, 1st born second, showcased an artistic spectrum arching from the emotionally charged fan-favorite, “Soul Sista,” which peaked at No. 18 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Songs charts, to the political viewpoints of “Fast Lane” and “Second Child”. Philip Bailey, of Earth Wind & Fire fame said Bilal is the rare singer who uses his voice like an instrument.
Bilal quickly developed a sizable following at his live shows which were known for being emotional and electrifying. Though his nearly 25-year career has been met with trials and tribulations, it hasn’t stopped him from seeing immense success in the music world. Bilal received great acclaim from his peers, who noted his range and ability to sing in a freeform style, as well as his classically trained falsetto. The soulful feel of the album led critics and industry leaders to label Bilal as a “neo-soul” artist. Bilal’s expansion into different music directions and boundary pushing explorations proved he is so much more.
Playing jazz venues and recording more progressive soul music in the following years, Bilal released four albums to critical success. His unreleased but widely leaked second album Love for Sale found wide acclaim among critics and listeners. It featured collaborations with Dr. Dre and J Dilla and was built around Bilal’s own musicianship, including live instrumentation. It had a vibe completely new and different from its predecessor. Interscope shelved the album indefinitely. It still received over half a million downloads and Bilal began touring even though there was no proper release of the album. He did not sign with another label for almost 10 years. During that time he performed live shows to continually increasing size audiences, contributed to the projects of other artists and created works on independent labels so as to maintain and grow from his creative vision.
As a member of the Soulquarians, an experimental collective that was active from the late 1990s to early 2000s, Bilal has been a cultural and musical influence on a whole new generation of musicians and producers. His extensive list of collaborations include Kendrick Lamar, Common, Erykah Badu, Jay-Z, Beyoncé, Guru, Kimbra, J Dilla, Robert Glasper, and The Roots.
Airtight’s Revenge, his experimental 2010 album, blends jazz, hip-hop, electronic, rock, soul, and blues into one raw, genuine collection of music. The album’s single, “Little One”, earned Bilal a 2011 Grammy Award nomination in the category of Best Urban/Alternative Performance. That year, he was also on the Roots’ Grammy-nominated album Undun (2011) and the Robert Glasper Experiment’s Grammy-winning Black Radio (2012).
With the release of his next album, A Love Surreal, Bilal achieved immediate commercial success. It debuted at No. 1 on iTunes’ R&B Chart. On Billboard, the album debuted at No. 17 on the Independent Albums Chart, No. 19 on the R&B Albums Chart, and No. 103 on the Billboard 200. The album received shining reviews, including an 8 of 10 from SPIN magazine, 4.5 out of 5 stars from Allmusic, and 4 of 4 stars from USA Today.
In August 2020, during the COVID-19 lockdown, Bilal wrote and recorded his first EP, Voyage-19, over the course of three days and in collaboration with various musicians in remote experimental sessions, which were streamed live on YouTube. The resulting three-track EP was released digitally the following month, with revenues of its sale and accompanying donations given to the participating artists, many of whom had been struggling financially due to the pandemic.
Bilal splits his time between the US and Morocco, where he paints and writes music.

CATCH THE WAVES ALBUM TOUR 2026: Making USA tour stops in NY, Philly & the DC-DMV areas, Moonchild performs live in early Spring April 2026.
L.A.-based alternative R&B trio, Moonchild are known for their spaced-out, Soulquarians-inspired grooves and the wispy, at-ease vocals of Amber Navran. Their lush, understated sound and synthesis of electronic and organic instruments evolved over the course of several records, as they toured with big-name stars and established a healthy following of their own with albums like 2019’s critically praised Little Ghost and its 2022 follow-up, Starfruit.
The members of Moonchild met at the University of Southern California and started the band in 2011, the lineup consisting of vocalist Navran (also a clarinetist and saxophonist) and fellow multi-instrumentalists Max Bryk (keyboards, saxophone, clarinet) and Andris Mattson (keyboards, trumpet, flügelhorn). The group self-released their debut album, Be Free, in 2012, not long after forming. Moonchild subsequently joined the roster of the independent U.K. label Tru Thoughts, where they continued to refine their sound with Please Rewind (2015) and Voyager (2017), the latter of which added harp and other stringed instrumentation to their blissed-out compositions. They’ve opened for the likes of Stevie Wonder and Georgia Anne Muldrow and, true to their genre-crossing appeal, have been featured together on recordings headlined by Detroit musician Brandon Williams (“Leave Love Be”) and hip-hop producer Tall Black Guy (“I Will Never Know”). The band’s output has also been sampled, as heard on Mac Miller‘s “Two Matches.”
Outside Moonchild, Navran, Bryk, and Mattson have worked as both solo artists and collaborators. In 2018, the duo issued the single “Get to Know It” ahead of the arrival of the full-length Little Ghost, which was released in September 2019. A companion set of instrumentals from the album, aptly titled Little Ghost Instrumentals, appeared a month later. In 2021, the band started sharing new songs from their fifth LP, Starfruit, beginning with the laid-back and jazzy “Too Good,” and the record arrived in February 2022. This new tour follows the release of their WAVES album which dropped in February of 2025.

Started in 1990 as a small gathering of friends behind the Museum of Science & Industry, the Chosen Few Picnic & House Music Festival is the world’s longest-running event dedicated to House Music. Nicknamed the “Woodstock of House Music” for its family-reunion vibe, the Picnic & Festival attracts more than 40,000 fans to Chicago’s Jackson Park each year, and counts among its supporters former United States President Barack Obama.
About the Chosen Few DJs:
Founded in 1977 by Wayne Williams, the Chosen Few DJs is a music collective that was among the first wave of DJs and producers in Chicago who created what became known as House Music. Since 1990, the Chosen Few DJs – Williams, Jesse Saunders, Tony Hatchett, Alan King, Andre Hatchett, Terry Hunter, and Mike Dunn – along with childhood friend Kim Parham – have organized the Chosen Few Picnic & House Music Festival, drawing more than 40,000 fans each year. The collective hosts events in cities across the United States and perform at festivals around the globe, including Amsterdam Dance Event, Winter Music Conference, Tribe Tambor Cruise, and Suncébeat. They also produce hit music, from Terry Hunter’s and Wayne Williams’ GRAMMY-nominated “It’s Your World” by Jennifer Hudson and NAACP Image Award-winning production on “Aretha Franklin Sings the Great Diva Classics” to Mike Dunn’s critically acclaimed, “My House from All Angles”, the smash “In The Beginning (There Was Jack)”, an update of the classic House track featuring Chuck Roberts and Monique Bingham, and Jesse Saunder’s 2019 Billboard chart-topping “Higher”.

In 1997 they were introduced via hip hop band, The Roots, production camp. Fatin was hired to write songs for Aja’s solo project at the time. By the fall of 1998 they became husband and wife and while assuming the roles of a new couple and new parents, Fatin took a job selling appliances and Aja became a homemaker caring for their first born, Aquil. TWO SHOWS – PERFORMING LIVE in PHILLY this Thanksgiving Weekend 2025!
With her crystal clear 5 octave range, her smooth, rich tone, and her ability to convey a wide swath of emotions with remarkable phrasing, Chanté Moore is likely a favorite singer of your favorite singer. The daughter of a minister, Moore grew up on gospel music and albums by George Duke and Lee Ritenour and began her songwriting journey by writing lyrics to their music. In the middle of her teenage years, Chanté decided that she was going to concentrate her efforts on becoming a professional singer after she gave an inspired performance in a high school rendition of The Wiz…and after she experienced her first standing ovation when she sang “Home”. In the ensuing years, she sang with bands at cocktail bars and at the age of 22, was discovered by legendary producer and executive Louil Silas who signed her to Silas Records, a subsidiary of MCA Records. Her first appearance on the Billboard Chart was in advance of her own project when she was featured on El DeBarge’s top 15 single, “You Know What I Like”. In 1992, Moore released her classic debut album, “Precious” produced in part by George Duke. Propelled by the singles “Love’s Taken Over” and “It’s Alright” in addition to album cuts and fan favorites like “As If We Never Met”, the album was RIAA certified Gold. About “Precious”, Rolling Stone Magazine wrote, “Moore explores the sweet entanglements of contemporary love with a supple soprano that floats over and into songs. Moore’s superb singing and writing will unquestionably win her a satisfied audience.”
In 1999, Chanté released her highest-ranking Billboard charting album, “This Moment Is Mine” which features her signature song “Chanté’s Got A Man At Home” which became a Billboard top ten Pop hit.
Her her final Silas/MCA album “Exposed” the following year, Moore took a break from releasing solo albums and continued to have success with collaborative work. She’s featured on the Isley Brothers’ 2001 single “Contagious,” a Top 20 pop hit nominated for a Grammy in the category of Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. Moore also recorded a pair of duet albums; 2003’s “Things That Lovers Do” and 2006’s “Uncovered/Covered”. She was a key cast member in the hit TV One show R&B Divas LA.
Since 2008, Chante has recorded and released four highly regarded albums including 2017’s festive holiday album “Christmas Back To You”. In 2024, Chante was selected to be the first American ever to participate in one of China’s most popular TV singing competition shows, Singer 2024. Competing with China’s most accomplished and beloved singers, Chanté tied for having the most 1st place finishes over the show’s 13 week stretch and in doing so, endeared herself and her talents to the 220 million viewers that the show reached weekly. In 2025, Chanté will release her latest project “EVOLve” featuring production by Laney Stewart, Tricky Stewart, Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds and Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis (the team that produced “Chanté’s Got A Man At Home” with Moore).
Of course, throughout her career, Chante Moore has been on stage dazzling audiences with her unique combination of humor, testimony and pristine singing. She will continue to share her unique voice with the world.
